Take a Spring Fling …The Callaway

We’ve been dreaming about it for months, and now it’s finally here. Spring in Callaway County.

What a perfect time to get outside and enjoy the dogwoods in bloom or the delicate spring wildflowers springing up everywhere you look. It makes a hike or bike ride on the Katy Trail like traveling through a watercolor painting. Just hop on at any of the access points in the county: at North Jefferson City, Tebbetts, Mokane or Portland. The section between Tebbetts and Portland is one of only two sections that also welcomes horseback riders. It’s a beautiful sight to see.

And speaking of flowers – probably the very best part of spring – be sure to schedule a trip to the Prairie Garden Trust in New Bloomfield. You can wander the whole area to enjoy whatever is in bloom (or in flight if you’re a lover of birds and butterflies), or choose your favorite natural area. Admission is free but donations are welcome. Or you can sign up for the PGT Bird Walk with birder Lottie Bushman on May 6 at 8 a.m. Registration is required.

Of course, there is more to spring than wildflowers … there’s morel mushrooms! Public lands like the Katy Trail State Park, Mark Twain National Forests, Little Dixie Lake and various conservation areas around Callaway County are great places to look. Pro Tip: The prime time to look is when the soil temperature reaches a consistent 50 degrees. Even the search itself is fun – like a highly challenging Easter egg hunt, without the easy-to-spot pastel colors.

If you prefer your morels the easy way, head to Morels & Microbrews in the Brick District in Fulton on May 6, 11 am to 4 p.m. This event is wildly popular but if you hurry, you can get your tickets now.

Balmy breezes are another favorite spring thing, drawing people to spend time on the terrace, veranda or deck. In Fulton, cool off on a warm day with one of the famous frozen cocktails served at The Station on their muraled patio. Or settle in to a table with a festive umbrella on the split level patio at the Post Office Bar & Grill for a drink and a meal. The new Fulton Wurst Haus (formerly Central Missouri Meats) is gearing up as a sister property to Hermann’s Famous Wurst Haus. The restaurant offers ample indoor and outdoor seating, and a menu that showcases award-winning bratwurst, hickory-smoked meats, German specialties, and more.

Add a bit more nature to your leisure time with a visit to one of Callaway County’s wineries. Sip a glass of red, white or boutique wine while enjoying the lake view at Serenity Valley Winery in Fulton. Explore the peaceful surroundings and unusual elderberry wines ranging from dry to sweet at ElderBlossom View in New Bloomfield. Or treat yourself to a delicious meal paired with your favorite wine, a gorgeous view and spring birdsong at Canterbury Hill Winery in Holts Summit.

If your taste in music extends beyond birdsong, be sure to make time to take in the Broadway, Pop & Swing show by the Callaway Singers at the Brick District Playhouse on Sunday, April 30 and Thursday, May 4 at 2 p.m.-3:30 p.m.

Remember that Missouri weather can change in a second – so don’t waste time waiting. Get out and enjoy spring the Callaway.
