Get “MO” Cozy In Fulton & Callaway County, Missouri

January in mid-Missouri can get a little raw and a sunny winter day can turn bitter cold without much notice. But there’s no reason for it to give you a case of cabin fever. Just schedule a get away that’s designed to keep you cozy.

Start with an overnight stay at Loganberry Inn Bed & Breakfast in Fulton, a grand Victorian built in 1899. Spend your evening by the fire pit or working on a puzzle in the Churchill Lounge before retiring to your charming, comfortable guest room. Morning brings a scrumptious breakfast prepared by chef and owner, Nanette.

Indoor pursuits are likely going to be the order of the day, and a visit to the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury on the campus of Westminster College will make you feel the warm all over. The church was founded in the late 11th or early 12th century in London and destroyed in the Blitz in 1940.

All that was left were the outer walls, columns and bell tower. In 1966, the church was disassembled and rebuilt, stone by stone, in Fulton. Beneath the church, explore the history of one of modern history’s most admired orators, Sir Winston Churchill, at America’s National Churchill Museum. His speeches carried the citizens of England through the darkest days of World War II.

If you’re seeking activity more than serenity, head to Battle Creek Paintball in Kingdom City and burn off some energy with indoor rage rooms, axe throwing and escape rooms.

Speaking of energy, you’re going to need to stay fed and hydrated against the cold and we have you covered.

Wrap your hands around a cup of cozy at Court Street Café in the Brick District Playhouse in Fulton. Choose from hot teas, seasonal lattes and enjoy it with breakfast, a pastry, sandwich or dessert.

Take the kids out for a round of game-playing at GoPo Gourmet Popcorn in Fulton. Choose from over 600 board games while sipping a fantastic hot chocolate: steamed milk with hot cocoa mix stirred in, topped with whipped cream and a decadent dark chocolate drizzle. For the grown-ups, treat yourself to a GoJo, an original GoPo coffee drink that rotates throughout the year.

For a light lunch, try a famous $2 bologna sammie. Choose one meat and one cheese on white bread while staying warm and comfy around the old-fashioned wood stove at Crane’s Country Store in Williamsburg. Be sure to shop their amazing collection of quailty outdoor gear, clothing, and accessories.

Nothing beats a great bowl of soup on a cold winter’s day. Chef Adrian at Canterbury Hill Winery and Restaurant in Holts Summit has created from-scratch soups you can order as a side dish, like tomato bisque, creamy potato cheeseburger, country chili, and jalapeno cheddar bratwurst and noodle.

Visit the Post Office Bar & Grill in Fulton for a pile of their famous hot wings to warm up from the inside out. Or, check out the Fire & Ice Chicken Sandwich at 1851 Underground Tap & Grill in Fulton. It’s a tender chicken breast topped with pepper jack and smothered in Cholula honey sauce - a sweet sauce with a subtle heat. For an adult kick, check their specials on Fireball shots.

Finally, after a day of being out and about in the cold, relax back home with a traditional hot toddy using the Orange Clove Hot Toddy Mix from Homewares by Grae Studio Design in Fulton (some assembly required!). A favorite winter warmer, the hot toddy is sipped as a soothing tonic of hot water, spices, whiskey and honey before bedtime, or as relief to cold, wet weather.

In addition to all the fun you can have any time, be sure to work in special event or two into your calendar:

Jan 3, 6 p.m.-7 p.m.: Brooklyn Pizza in Fulton offers live music the first two Wednesdays every month. The first offering of the New Year is Planet Jazz, one of the most popular Jazz groups in Mid-Missouri for more than 25 years.

Jan. 25: Head back to Canterbury Hill Winery & Restaurant for their latest murder mystery dinner “My Fair Murder,” complete with a delicious Chicken Marsala dinner followed by Lady Fingers for dessert. Doors open at 5 p.m. Their last show of the season will be March 21, so don’t delay.

Feb 3, 7 p.m.-midnight: Dress in your finest for the return of the light at the Central Missouri Renaissance Festival Annual Winter Masquerade Ball at the Fulton Event Center. Ancient Celtic & Viking lore rule the evening. Dancing, waltz lessons, cash bar with beer, mead and cider, and a Silent Auction are all planned for the night. Food, soft drinks, coffee and tea are included in the ticket package.

There really IS an escape from winter – just treat yourself to a cozy get away in Fulton and Collaway County, MO.
